Peacock kolam

This kolam or rangoli is made of peacock or flower motif. Kolam is a very beautiful art known in various names across the country. In Tamil Nadu, one has KolamMadanae in Rajasthan, Chowkpurna in Northern India, Alpana in Bengal, Aripana in Bihar, chowk pujan in uttar pradesh etc. Kolam in Tamil nadu is more known to me as I'm a tamilian. Our ancestors used rice floor to draw this design on prepared mud floor in front of the house. It was so done to feed ants, insects and other small animals. Thus, avoiding them wandering into their homes in search of food.

This kolam or rangoli comes in the category of bird kolam, dots kolam, flower kolam, peacock kolam and pulli kolam. The center of the kolam is a floral design with leaves. There are six peacocks around the center, seen perching on a branch with small leaves. Its overall shape is hexagonal in shape. Its a pulli kolam which is drawn with the help of dots placed in an hexagonal shape in a planned way. In the past, Dots were kept randomly arranged and than the design is created. This somewhat like a puzzle which boosts the creative part of the brain.

The kolam powder is taken between thumb and fore finger. Line is drawn on the earth without directly touching it. It needs good practice to draw the line without spilling the kolam powder everywhere and spoiling the design.

"The pride of the peacock is the glory of god" -William Blake

Peacock is India's national bird. they are very beautiful. Their feathers are used as accessory or to enhance elegance in a place. Their feathers are so rich in color and very beautiful that many of us can't stop admiring them. In one point or another in our life we might have liked peacock green and would have chosen it as a favorite color. In my childhood, I used to go to my father's office just to see peacocks which sometimes comes just for a short visit.

This kolam or rangoli design is made of peacock, flower, deepam or lamp motifs put togethr. we can also see butterflies in this design. In the center the deepam's are so arranged that they look like kuthu vizhaku. on either side of the center is peacock motifs. Other designs togther form a diamond shape. The corners of the overall square design is occupied by deepam and butterfly.

There is strict formal balance in the design. Elegance of the design comes from the curved lines in the motif. It comes under the category of bird kolam, peacock kolam, butterfly kolam, flower kolam and deepam kolam.

“Be like a peacock and dance with all of your beauty.” ― Debasish Mridha.

“I shall always remember how the peacocks’ tails shimmered when the moon rose amongst the tall trees, and on the shady bank the emerging mermaids gleamed fresh and silvery amongst the rocks…”  ― Hermann Hesse.

Peacock is the most beautiful bird with all those attractive feathers. It was used as a hand fan for kings. It has a richness and elegance to it. It is believed that peacock feathers are used to keep lizards away from the house. Peacock is the national bird of our country.

The center of the design is concentric stars. On the either side of the star are peacocks. They are reflected on the bottom half. The feathers of top two peacock and bottom two peacock are merged. It is drawn with the help of dots. It is elongated vertically.

It comes under the category of bird kolam, dots kolam, peacock kolam, star kolam, pulli kolam and other kolam. My grandmother and mother used to draw kolam on the floor and notebooks to record it. Whenever they saw a kolam or rangoli design on a magazine they used to get so interested. Their curiosity created innovative new designs.
