When something new is introduced it intrigues people. It inspires them if it satisfies them. That is the reason why they are seen in the art world. And when it is presented in art form, it attracts people due to its novelty. People say that new things make people investigate it until it gets old and they get bored. Introducing modified version of an object makes the old ones retain their value, in some cases the source objects value goes up.
This kolam design probably is created when candle was introduced in Tamil Nadu. The candles in the design seems Asian. It looks Japanese or Chinese. These candles are arranged in a cross like patterns with small plus shaped motif. triangular border finishes the design. The candle is colored and floral motifs adorn the candles.

Flower and deepam are part of kolam design for a long time as these are decorating items used inside the house. Flowers are grown in every garden of south Indian houses. Mainly one can see many kinds of jasmine. They are used to adorn ones hair, photographs of deities, any precious object etc. Deepam were used as functional accessory in a house, later with electricity available, it became more of a decorative accessory of our homes.
Kolam design is made of flower and deepam motif to form an attractive design. The center design is flower with twelve petals and a uneven outline. Repeated on either side on top and bottom of the center design. Curved diamond shaped motifs connect the flowers. Four deepam on four sides finishes the design.

There are five important elements that is considered to be the base of everything- living or non living. These are water, air, fire, earth and sky. Lamps are symbol of one of the main element- fire.

When i was a child my mother used to draw kolam everyday in front of the house. She used to collect pages of magazine which had inspirational designs. And also has a notebook with kolam drawn with pencil or pen. These were usually scribbles or trials of the kolam or rangoli design. She also tried new innovative designs. With random number of dots on the page she designed creative motifs.

Some educated women started recording it on paper. They also added some inspirational and their own creative designs to this notebook. So gradually the content increases.
This particular kolam is an arrangement of deepam or lamp to form a design. First dots are kept than the arrangement is done. In the center is a circled dot and four deepam facing away from each other in a '+' like formation. After an interval another deepam is kept on the original four. A curved outline encompasses this. The vertex of the outlines are completed with deepams.

Lamp or deepam is sign of light which drives away darkness. Lotus motifs are mostly seen in traditional Indian paintings. The flower in the center is shell like and in bit different shade than that of all others. There is a green color star that encloses the central design.

Flower signifies new life or something that brings color to our life. Stars shines light in the path of life. These are some beliefs about the motifs used or say the significance of the motifs used.
The center is a flower cum star. Which is surrounded by sets of lamp or deepam. In between the deepam or lamp we can see small stars. The flower is seen between the outer layer of deepam or lamp. The colors used are well balanced. The emphasis is given by the center flower and the star.
