Lamp or deepam is symbol of light. It stops the spreading of darkness and avoid the spreading of darkness. Design even consist of a star which is a symbol of light which shines on the right path gives a right direction. The overall shape of the design is hexagonal.
Star is the center of the overall structure of design. It is placed inside the confines of a hexagon. Deepam or lamp is there in the spaces between the design and on the vertex of the star outside the hexagonal outline. It can be drawn withe the guidance of points or just as a rangoli. Can be filled with color or just left in its skeletal form.
It comes in the category of Diwali kolam, Karthigai deepam kolam, Lamp kolam and Festival kolam. This rangoli kolam combines both star and deepam (lamp).both of them are lightening agent and they eliminate darkness. Thereby they symbolize elimination of evil or darkness from life. When drawn in the entrance it is believed to keep away evil eyes.
