Kolam or rangoli design is inspired from day to day life of our ancestors and some of them are innovative designs. But most of the Indian arts are inspired by the surrounding of the people. Like the cave paintings which shows humans, animals and plants. These are mostly stylized as they are not very realistic. And probably they didn't have much tool to work with. That is not our topic, the thing is everything around them inspired them.
This is one such design. Which looks like a stylized version of the ship. The flags in the ship can have its own meaning or it can be the Pan African flag or flag of Democratic Republic of Afghanistan. There is a cabin in the middle with bit of islamic design. And smoke is coming from the ship. It might be a stylized design of a ship standing which stood out from the other. Some things that are different from others stand out and are more inspirational.
Our culture is something to cherish as it has some value and meaning. Everything has a reason hidden under tradition. With changing time we are letting go of our culture. It is best to take our tradition and culture, which is our identity, with us when we are developing. Letting go means that it won't reach the coming generation. Thus, forgotten in time which means that most of good values are gone forever. Thanks for reading and i hope some of these words reaches you & stays with you.

Kolam or rangoli is design made by common house wives. We call them home maker and they were true to the name. Am an interior designer pursuing education. But truly they did all jobs of a interior designer, house keeping, baby sitting, cooking and what not. They were all multitasking and handled it all very well. They were also very observant of everything around them. Mainly nature inspired them.
Our ancestors were very close to nature. They studied them from very less distance than we do. Water bodies were much attractive to them as they usually lived near water bodies to fulfill their water needs. Thus, Lotus and water lilies became part of their floral designs. In Tamil Nadu, one has Kolam, Madanae in Rajasthan, Chowkpurna in Northern India, Alpana in Bengal, Aripana in Bihar, chowk pujan in uttar pradesh etc. Kolam in Tamil nadu is more known to me as I'm a tamilian. Our ancestors used rice floor to draw this design on prepared mud floor in front of the house. It was so done to feed ants, insects and other small animals. Thus, avoiding them wandering into their homes in search of food.

There are six peacocks around the center, seen perching on a branch with small leaves. Its overall shape is hexagonal in shape. Its a pulli kolam which is drawn with the help of dots placed in an hexagonal shape in a planned way. In the past, Dots were kept randomly arranged and than the design is created. This somewhat like a puzzle which boosts the creative part of the brain.
The kolam powder is taken between thumb and fore finger. Line is drawn on the earth without directly touching it. It needs good practice to draw the line without spilling the kolam powder everywhere and spoiling the design.
